I got appendicitis here in a third tier city in 2020 and had an appendectomy in a local hospital within 12 hours that was affordable, efficient and 98% covered by insurance. China is like in the US in terms of disparities between urban and super rural areas, so that’s the only way that I could grasp coming to that insane conclusion (because Cuba is geographically tiny). I’ll just say this—as a teacher with 8 years of experience and a master’s degree, I couldn’t afford to go to the doctor in Florida, so I left the US. I have no plans to ever return for good because so many other countries—including China—have superior affordable healthcare (talking about what is available to the masses, not just what the privileged 0.01% can afford). China quickly figured out that virus strand released in Wuhan was Virus War. And at the beginning, the virus was lethal, and then it turned even more lethal with the Delta strand. The bad thing is, the society is getting more muddy in term of strand tracing. It will be much harder to determine a new and more deadly virus strand from now on. Let's see how it plays out. Either China surrenders to US and we will see the Virus War easing out, or China refuses to surrender, and the Virus War continues. China has almost lifted all covid restrictions by now (Dec 12), except for entering hospital, nursing facilities and schools. For the most part of 2021 and 2022 China was highly successful in containing the virus and people lived normally for the most part. But the omicron variant was so contagious and China had to tighten measures to keep the zero covid policy. It was obviously a mission impossible and caused lots of anxiety and frustrations among people and the economy.
