That cannot happen until the Ukrainian can defend their airspace. That cannot happen until west sends their air forces to Ukraine. That will not happen because the west is weak. The only solution is to supply modern air power to Baltic states, mainly to Poland, Chech, Slovakia, and send them to keep the Ukrainian airspace under control of Ukrainians. A Ukrainian commander was quoted by WSJ suggesting the rate of losses in the area "favoured Russia" and strongly advocating tactical withdrawal to stronger defensive lines in the west of Donestk oblast. This all seems to support the narrative that Zelensky, against advice from his commanders, is determined to hold ever settlement at any cost, and has a "no step back, never retreat" mentality. Presumably he is worried about either PR or the borders in the event the conflict freezes, or both. Regardless, this means he refuses to allow tactical retreats at great cost to Ukrainian forces. For example, a Ukrainian Captain was quoted by the Washington Post during the storming of Soledar saying "it makes no military sense for our troops to remain in Soledar at this stage" and suggesting withdrawal to better defensive positions westward would be imminent. Instead, however, Ukrainian forces continued to try to cling to Soledar for at least another week after that comment, with a fresh formation being thrown into the town in a desperate attempt to retain it. Ukraine MoD then refused to conceded it for further weeks, until just acknowledging withdrawal yesterday (and claiming it was an orderly tactical retreat, lol) even though Russia has verifiably held not only Soledar, but surrounding settlements, for some time now. Zelensky now appears to be doing the same thing on a larger scale in Bakhmut, despite US advice (and that of his own commanders) to withdraw. More and more troops are being thrown into the meat grinder, while Russia slowly gains ground anyway. Ominously, Zelensky passed a law two days ago that would see any Ukrainian soldier who refuses to fight, declines an order, or retreats without orders, be sentenced to 12 years in prison. There is public speculation this is a response to reluctance from troops on the ground and/or fresh recruits to go to Bakhmut and continue to die for what is increasingly seen as a lost cause there. Bakhmut itself, as a city, isn't that important. Bakhmut as a battle, however, appears to be massively important because the top Ukrainian leadership has deemed it so. Russia turned it into the central point of its war of attrition, and Zelensky seems to have taken the bait. If we are to make comparisons to WW2 Germany, this was what did Hitler in vs Russia. "No step back, no retreating" resulted in the Whermacht being grinded down against the Russians in the long run, despite the German generals knowing better, because Hitler was insistent on holding PR points (like Stalingrad) and would-be lebensraum. In contrast, Russia seems not to have falled into this trap yet in Ukraine despite being the ones on the offensive. They conducted fairly bloodless tactical retreats from the Kherson and Kharkiv regions the moment they realized the positions were logistically compromised and would be costly to try to hold, and fell back to stronger lines of defense. It's embarrassing, but it saved them thousands of troops. Russia's biggest blunder, by far, was in the opening stages of the war, where it invaded with only around 150,000 men. It assumed Ukraine would collapse within three weeks, with the government immediately fleeing, and thus that it wouldn't need the full might of the Russian military. This was a HUGE error, as Ukraine did not collapse and instead mobilized wave after wave of men until the Russians found themselves with a major deficiency in numbers across an over-extended frontline against a determined enemy. I don't know how the war will end. I certainly don't expect Russia to storm all of Ukraine at this stage. However, I don't find overly hard to imagine a scenario where Ukraine continues to suffer disproportionate and unnecessary casualties until losing Bakhmut, only for Russia to then punch the northern border again with another 150 to 200 thousand men and drown most of Ukraine east of the Dnipro in manpower the Ukrainian's don't have the force left to hold back on all fronts. 18,000 men near Belarus won't be stopping 150K men freed up by the Russian mobilization, even if that number is poorer in quality (though I'd be surprised if the 18K weren't also largely reserves). Russia blundered by not taking Ukraine seriously before, and undercommiting. I doubt they'll make that mistake in judgement twice.>> <<@bravewave2084 says : Go get 'um.
