I was born in 1981 and lived in NYC until 1998. I would see kids get jumped over nonsense all the time. It would randomly happen, you turn around and some poor kid would be getting beat to hell by several kids with a huge crowd around watching. Only difference is there were no crowds with mobile cameras capturing these " jumpings ", only the shotty corner store security footage, if anything. Many kids got away with facing charges because they would beat you up, then bounce out of there so fast. You didn't want to seem like a rat (cultural norm in many urban eighborhoods) and that would be that. As a parent, I would be devastated if this happened to my son, and I'd likely have a psychotic break, but not before I made the teenage wastes of matter in this universe suffer for the rest of their natural lives. As for my son, we've taught him that if he sees something, say something. Intervene if you must but only to stop what is happening. Don't let people pick on others and do not ever let me find out you've bullied someone. It starts in the home, I think. It says a lot about all families involved, their socio-economic status, education, both parents in the home, medical management of any existing conditions, and more. But, a group of children that organize and followed through with intent to cause physical harm on a single, unarmed child, that resulted in a death of said child needs to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the State and federal punitive justice system as an example of what happens when you commit cowardly acts of violence.
