Yes that would mean if you bought pepperspray you get a dose of it in a training session, trust me it's painful. Using a firearm in self defence requires training, not only in the personal weapon but in the laws in which it is allowed. Our Firearm laws work for us, they would never work in the US (lord knows California, New York and Chicago are the closet to our laws and restrictions and look how well that's worked out for them). Responsible firearms owners in Australia have grown up in a culture where it has not been a case of carrying for protection when going out your front door but I can't make any promises that last comment will age well as our culture changes. Because when someone is planning to commit mass murder they are obviously not going to follow the law. Self defence has not been a legally valid reason to own a firearm for many decades before the post Port Arthur gun laws came in in 1996. Academics and journalists alike tout these laws as having eliminated mass shootings in Australia. That is simply not the case. There have been several and many other mass killings not using a firearm to boot. Not to mention many, many more shootings and public stabbings where the numbers involved doesn't classify them as a mass murder. Such as the Monash shootings, literally a school shooting with a hand gun but which killed 2. The only thing these bans on weapons for self defence do is to ensure the law abiding cannot defend themselves, except with their fists and furniture. Meaning mostly the innocent die. Shameful.
