During WW2 my great grandfather was too old to serve in the war. Besides which, he had already served in WW1. So, instead he volunteered as a "Special Constable" in the police to help replace younger policemen who had gone to help with the war effort. So it was, that one day, whilst on his beat walking down Rose Street, in the middle of Edinburgh, that he encountered an escaped Elephant. His initial attempts to corral the animal were unsuccessful and he sought refuge in a public phone box to call for assistance, only to find himself trapped by the stubborn pachyderm which was refusing to leave its new "friend" alone. Unfortunately, upon informing his colleagues of his plight, his initial pleas for help went unheeded. Instead, gales of laughter rang down the phone line. Rose Street, you see, is famous throughout Scotland for the high density of its licensed premises (pubs or bars if you prefer). His colleagues assumed that he had succumbed to its charms and was now in a state of delirium. Eventually, his colleagues relented. On coming to his "rescue" they were surprised to find a real, live, life-sized elephant in front of them which, with the assistance of it's trainer (who arrived just in the nick of time), they were able to bring to heel. The trainer had come from a travelling circus nearby in Waverley Market. He had been taking his Elephant for walkies (as you do) but developed a bit of a thirst as he wandered down Rose Street. Presumably, the pub he chose had a "no elephants" policy. Either that, or its door was slightly on the wee side. So, the trainer had simply tied Nelly up, but not well enough apparently! History does not record whether or not the trainer was given a ticket for parking his Elephant in a restricted zone, for failing to apply its handbrake, or if he was charged with being drunk in charge of an Elephant. One suspects not. They were simpler times (WW2 aside) and my great grandfather's colleagues were always delighted to recall the time that he got shut in a phone box, by an Elephant, in Rose Street. Nor does history record if the elephant was wearing its stage makeup - but I like to imagine it was pink.>> <<@Fuckthesystem.endwar says : Who still goes to a circus? Thats weird>> <<@insideLEGkick says : Gross that there are still shows like this.>> <<@trishamott7652 says : The use of elephants, or any animals should be banned for use in circuses! Especially since the percentage rate of neglect & abuse of elephants and other circus animals are extremely high. People really should just NOT attend any circuses until they remove animals from their "acts".๐Ÿ˜”๐Ÿ˜ช #TeamElephant>> <<@michaelwilliams6814 says : Boycott Butte Montana, lovers of circus elephants and animal cruelty.
