<<@KatrinaLove62 says : A lot has NOT changed. There were ASEL breaches on 75% of voyages between 2018 and 2020 that had sheep AND Independent Observers (IOs) aboard, including but not limited to:
 * poor quality feed including mouldy feed * dirty drinking water * withholding feed * withholding water * insufficient space * Incompetent, incomplete or absent euthanasia * lambing (late stage pregnant ewes should not have been loaded) * sheep dying or needing to be euthanised for shearing cut infections (should not have been loaded) * sheep dying or needing to be euthanised for dog bite wounds (should not have been loaded and all dogs working with sheep must be muzzled). All that happened whilst IOs were watching, photographing, videoing and taking notes - what the hell happened when no one was watching on all those voyages between 2020 and 2022 when no IOs were aboard because of Covid? IO reports since 2022 have been sadly lacking in detail. There was also heat stress observed on nearly every voyage, in all months of the year that they sailed (excludes prohibition period June to Sept), including up to pant score of 4 (5 = imminent death). ESCAS breaches are still occurring - sheep "leaking" from approved supply chains. Fully conscious slaughter is still the norm. Sheep that would normally at least be spared that horror in Australia are being loaded onto ships and sailing for (on average) 16 days (or over 70 days of you were aboard the Bahijah to Israel Jan - April) to countries that have no concept of animal welfare yet alone laws to protect or enforce animal welfare, to have their throats cut whilst fully conscious. The argument "If we don't do it someone else will do it worse" is an argument a five-year-old would use - there are already several countries that export WAY more live sheep than we do - they don't care whether we continue or don't. If we stop and Sudan and Ethiopia fill the gap, sheep will be travelling shorter distances from similar climates, and from one country with no animal welfare laws where they would be slaughtered whilst fully conscious to another country with no animal welfare laws where they will be slaughtered whilst fully conscious. These clueless panelists are saying we should instead subject Australian sheep to MUCH worse welfare outcomes than they face here, by subjecting them to excessive long-haul transport and fully conscious slaughter so other countries don't nab our market share.

Why don’t we apply that to sex trafficking? The wildlife trade? How about seal clubbing - could we do that better than the Canadians? Could we out-whale the Japanese? Doing the wrong thing better than someone else is nothing to be proud of.
All Middle Eastern countries we export live animals to (except Israel), also import chilled beef and/or sheep meat from Australia - animals stunned and Halal-slaughtered in domestic slaughterhouses. In fact, the chilled meat trade to the Middle East alone is worth 6-7 x the value of the entire live sheep trade.

Live sheep export numbers have declined from over 6 million in 2011 to under 500k in 2022; and yet, the sheep industry still thrives - can one of these numpties explain how ending the export of that last 500k, from a state with a flock size of 12 million, in a country with a flock size of 70 million is going to be the ruination of the entire sheep industry?

Stop approaching this from emotion and tradition and embrace the science, data and expert opinion of hundreds if not thousands of vets and every animal protection organisation on the planet.>> <<@CitizenShane54 says : The pro live export advocates should take a trip on the next ship packed in with 20,000 odd sheep and see how they feel about it. Farmers have four years notice to make any changes to their business. I had one weeks notice of termination after 17 years with one employer, so don’t give me that rubbish about suicide. We had a dog named Caleb: he was far more intelligent than Sky’s Caleb.>> <<@KingsleyThomson-j1w says : Why can't the middle eastern representative elites come to Australia and supervise the slaughter of the Animals in Australia and then export the sheep or cattle to these countries,,,I am a West Australian and I have worked at an Abbatior in this state and this could be a suggestion to this problem with live export,,>> <<@paulveenings6861 says : Oh well sheep farmers will be stocking up on 22 amo.>> <<@Prognosis__ says : There will be no sheep industry shortly. The WEF bringing us closer to Frankenstein meat, fake meat or just plain bugs>> <<@oldnutta7611 says : Don't forget a lot of the LNP are on board with this ban too. So don't expect this to be reversed it they get into power.>>
