They have to accept the good things such as their victory in WW2 and their enormous technological innovations during the Cold War, even as they reject the policies of Lenin and Stalin. The Germans wrestle with their past, and we in the US wrestle with ours. You can see what the result has been over the past few years as we rejected too much of our past in the name of change. It's been... messy.
