And because safety requirements were significantly tightened in the years that followed due to incidents and accidents, the investment cost of nuclear power plants has not fallen over time but increased significantly. The few ongoing new construction projects in Europe and the US are plagued by delays and cost blowouts, such as Olkiluoto in Finland and Flamanville in France. Olkiluoto has been under construction for 18 years and Flamanville may possibly go online this year after 17 years of construction. It was initially budgeted at EUR 3.3 billion but is now expected to cost more than EUR 12 billion, after a delay of 12 years! Because of the investment cost incurred, these projects are multiple times more costly than would be economically sensible. Older nuclear power plants cannot compete economically with other energy sources and can only be kept online with subsidies. The only way to keep them running is by nationalising the commercial risks, which means slugging the taxpayer, as is happening in Europe and the US. Recent studies have concluded that renewables such as wind and solar are many times more cost-efficient and that a complete change-over to renewables is technically possible and economically cost-efficient. Furthermore, recyclable wind turbine blades are already being installed and solar panels can also be recycled. The IEA has found that nuclear power plants are much too expensive compared with renewables and therefore uneconomical. Small modular reactors are a pipedream. Companies in the US have given up on them because they are not economically feasible. Nuclear energy accounted for a share of 15.1% of global energy generation in 1985. By the year 2021, that share had dropped to 9.8%. Renewables are being successfully rolled out in many advanced and apparently more mature, smarter and more educated countries than Australia. Apart from massive and incalculable delays and cost overruns, Australia has a growing problem of water scarcity, and water stress is growing with climate change. France has had to limit energy output from its nuclear reactors due to high river temperatures in a 2023 heatwave. All of this information is freely available on the Internet. Only if you are too lazy or unable to read do you have an excuse for not knowing any of this. The sole purpose of Dutton proposing seven nuclear power plants in Australia that will take much too long to build is for Australia to keep burning coal and gas for as long as possible, which will do absolutely nothing to lower people’s electricity prices any time soon. It will add massive amounts of additional carbon to the atmosphere and accelerate the warming of the climate. And because Australia will fail to meet its emissions reductions targets, our exports will be slugged with massive carbon border adjustment levies and lead to job losses and the gradual demise of our economy.>> <<@Bruski68. says : Well what exactly did you think they were going to do, it's not like they can defeat it on factual or economic grounds, so they had no option than to fall back on that tired old saw, of derision and scare mongering, Nuclear is the only way forward if we want to be a competitive, prosperous, and Sovereign country, of course that's the antithesis of what the Coalition government wants.>> <<@pantsgaming759 says : the commy left who are unwilling to compromise will loose it all at some point.>> <<@gbmarso8260 says : Why small? 1 pala verde in USA wound power Australia>> <<@SherylSchrantz says : Go away Albo!!
