Australia’s population is currently 27 million, growing exponentially with a rough doubling every fifty years. In the Eastern Seaboard {QLD, NSW, Vic, Tas and SA} approximately 20gW {Gigawatts} of electricity is required to keep the lights on. If you look at the Australian Energy Management Organisation {AEMO} web site dashboard you will see that this is where I have derived the figure from their average of 19. If you explore the site you will see that of the sources of that electricity, over 60% comes from the two forms of coal {brown & black} and gas. Both forms of coal are to be retired by 2035 and so therein lies the problem. There will be a recurrent shortfall of base-load power of around 12 gW. Gas won’t be able to make up this short-fall because the State Governments are busy winding back gas exploration and what gas we product is sold without attracting royalties to Overseas interests. Whoever worked out that deal deserves to be sent permanently to Antarctica. Large scale nuclear reactors produce around 1.2 gW of power, meaning that even with seven of these, the deficit from coal leaving the market cannot be met. Peter Dutton chose to install seven as the initial tranche because they can be build with little resistance on existing sites with power poles and wires ready to be re-connected.
