If this was Ukraine, Russia or China then I might say you could have a point. The simplest explanation to something is usually the correct explanation. When a coup seems so lame and poor then it might have just been one general who drastically miscalculated. If the "coup" attempt seems like it was sizeable but didn't seem to have any organisation or flow, or even much bloodshed, well that's when you know it was likely instigated by the leader of the country itself as a way of seizing even more power and control. When the coup is very bloody and has a lot of bloodshed and fighting on both sides, that's how you know it was a real coup and likely an internal one.
