Leave behind a toxic waste legacy that will long outlast any energy benefits gained. What's the cost of Dutton's nuclear fantasy? Dutton/O'Brien won't tell us, and it's easy to see why - we're talking hundreds of billions to perhaps over a trillion dollars. Just look at the costs of recent large-scale reactors recently completed (or still under construction): * The total cost estimate for the twin Vogtle reactors is US$35 billion (AU$52.6 billion), licensed for 40 years (not 60-80). * 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝘄𝗶𝗻 𝗩𝗖 𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗨𝗦$𝟭𝟬 𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗱. * Some estimates suggest the all up cost for the Barakah four reactors with finance was $US34 billion, or more than $AU51 billion. * Olkiluoto-3's final price tag is estimated at around €11 billion (AU$17.7 billion). * Flamanville-3's current estimate is at around €13.2 billion (AU$21.3 billion). * The cost estimate for the twin Hinkley Point C reactor project is currently £31-34 billion (AU$59-65 billion). Global uranium production is currently insufficient to meet world requirements - see the World Nuclear Association's webpage titled 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗨𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘂𝗺 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, posted 16 May 2024, which includes a chart titled 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘂𝗺 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 (𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗨). I'd suggest a so-called "nuclear renaissance" is only going to make the global uranium supply problem much worse. Finite nuclear fuels will only get more expensive. Uranium extraction from seawater is experimental only and is still not available at large-scale (if ever). Fun fact: 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘂𝗺 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗻𝗼 𝗳𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝘀𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗽𝗲𝘀 - it's impossible to start a fissile chain reaction from mined thorium. See the Nuclear Energy Agency's 2015 report titled 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘛𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘕𝘶𝘤𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘍𝘶𝘦𝘭 𝘊𝘺𝘤𝘭𝘦: 𝘚𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘵- 𝘵𝘰 𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨-𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘮 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴. Australia has a substantial global share of uranium reserves, but it has no conversion, enrichment &/or fuel fabrication processing/production capability. All Australian yellowcake (U₃O₈) production goes offshore for further processing elsewhere, including: * 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 from U₃O₈ into uranium hexafluoride (UF₆); * 𝗘𝗻𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 of UF₆ using gas centrifuge technology to the required enrichment level; * 𝗙𝘂𝗲𝗹 𝗙𝗮𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 where the enriched UF₆ is converted chemically to uranium dioxide powder, then pressed into ceramic pellets and sintered (baked) at high temperature. The pellets are then encased in metal tubes to form fuel rods, which are arranged into a fuel assembly ready for introduction into a reactor. I'd suggest Australia may well have control of its uranium reserves but not over any nuclear fuel processing and fabrication. Meanwhile, most if not all the ageing and increasingly unreliable coal-fired power generator units in Australia will likely close before 2040. Where's the affordable, reliable, abundant electricity coming from in the coming years/decades?
