Obviously, it is impossible to separate sports and politics in today's world; every sporting event is organized along national boundaries with national flags, uniforms, anthems, local sportscasters lauding their national teams, pictures on cereal boxes, and on and on and on. If the sport were more important to the athlete than being Russian, that athlete would not be Russian.
