Given the IDF is operating under the Hannibal directive, which has led to (at least) 13 hostages being killed by the IDF before, it is not at all clear what happened. One can hope that the Israeli people will end Netanyahu's reign and elect a more reasonable government. Because Netanyahu personally stands to gain from this or any conflict, he has no incentive to negotiate peace, or to prevent further escalation with other countries in the region. This could have catastrophic consequences for the US, as we are hard-wired by the control of the AIPAC lobby to automatically support Israel no matter what their actions are. I don't want our tax dollars to support the depravities being perpetrated on the people of Gaza and the west bank, and see no reason for America to shoulder the burden of defending Israel from a war they may start with Iran or Lebanon, especially at the cost of American lives.
