The Biden administration effectively managed the withdrawal from Afghanistan, ensuring minimal resources were used. Over the course of the war, from October 2001 to 2021, we tragically lost 2,400 American soldiers and saw over 20,000 injured. The cost to taxpayers over these ten years is significant, and the loss of 13 service members during the withdrawal highlights the sacrifices made. The loss of any life is a tragedy, of course, and it is obviously tragic that people lost their lives in that withdrawal. But plotting the logistics of a military withdrawal is not an easy thing to do at the best of times. And viewing this incident in isolation, as if this one incident would define her presidency or even her vice-presidency, or as if this was a point of differentiation from Trump in a negative way, is a mistake. If mistakes were made here, how do they contrast to Trump wholeheartedly embracing misinformation, for instance, in the COVID pandemic? How many sacred lives did that cost? And how much easier was his task there to simply continue to trust his experts and promote public trust in public safety measures, versus the complicated logistics of a necessary military withdrawal? Itā€™s difficult to imagine Trump even being able to contribute to a discussion on such a moderately technical matter, or even to select basically competent specialists to advise on such matters. Trump values loyalty, not competence, and Project 2025ā€™s policy plans to supercharge that preference throughout the government. This doesnā€™t mean that Vice President Harris is necessarily clear of *any* mistakes (although, none of this said that she was actually to blame for what happened in the withdrawal - I havenā€™t seen what the report says yet, so I donā€™t know if thereā€™s any commentary in there, though admittedly the timing has me a bit skeptical that the people preparing the report were unbiased). But it needs to be considered in context, and itā€™s hard to see how that wider context could reflect *that* badly on Harris. Itā€™s a ding on her record, and itā€™s personal tragedies for those who lost loved ones and those who lost their lives, but itā€™s not a judgment on her overall competence. And thatā€™s all before considering policy, and getting into their substantially different visions for the country: the dystopian Project 2025 designed by Trump advisers and JD Vanceā€™s friends at the Heritage Foundation versus Harrisā€™s actually grounded and helpful vision.>> <<@roxannhanrahan7639 says : I can't watch because I will no longer listen to Dana Bash.
