Shu Shi shared a very deep bond with his brother, Su Zhe. Both took the imperial exams together and both entered civil service together. Both were very accomplished literary figures and politicians. For their "offences" of speaking out and criticism of government decisions or policies through their letters, essays and poems, both experienced demotions and exiles to serve in remote places. This was one of their partings. On this mid-autumn festival night, where traditionally, families come together for reunions, Shu Shi wrote this poem to express how much he missed his brother and the sorrow in his heart.
