In a fast, moving digital environment, misinformation is something more than a nuisance. It's an evolving public safety threat. Critical thinking skills to sift through the mass of information online often simply elude people. Our psychological tendencies like confirmation bias, whereby we seek out information only to confirm our existing beliefs, and cognitive laziness, where we would rather be given simple answers than the truth, make it difficult for us to distinguish between credible sources and misleading ones. Misinformation is not an accident; it thrives any time digital platforms are not held accountable for what travels over their websites. That is why I think stronger regulations, forcing more transparency into how these platforms moderate content, are called for. They need to be bound to investigate the risks that misinformation places and institute clear policies that must be successful in countering misinformation. We need to make sure they do not turn a blind eye to the toxic proliferation of false information. While free speech is the bedrock of democracy, promoting open debate and divergent opinions, it must be weighed against public safety. Unchecked misinformation undermines the very cornerstone of free speech, engendering disbelief in our systems for conducting elections, public health programs, and social cohesion. When false information about vaccines, elections, or hate speech is spread, lives are put at risk, and our institutions suffer. I support regulations designed to combat hurtful misinformation, particularly content that has the potential to seriously affect public health or tamper with elections. That regulation ought to cover both disinformation, that is, deliberately false content and misinformation, which may be false but is spread without malicious intent, while still protecting legitimate discussion and minority opinion from censorship. We should also understand that the current frameworks on free speech was not designed for the digital era. The scale and speed at which information gets spread on the platforms today, abetted by algorithms too often designed to promote sensational or divisive content, make it so that misinformation spreads faster than facts. Giving us a chance to slow the spread and reduce some of the most destructive consequences of false information on society is one of the many things regulation can do.

Find who your local MP is, and send them a letter. Here's a template. Put it through chatGPT to give it some variance. Dear [MP NAME], I am writing to express my strong opposition to the Communications Legislation Amendment (Combatting Misinformation and Disinformation) Bill 2024 currently before Parliament. As a resident of Harvey and one of your constituents, I believe this bill poses significant risks to the well-being and freedom of our community and the wider Australian public.Upon reviewing the Bill, I have identified several areas of concern that I believe warrant opposition to this bill: Threat to Free Speech: The bill gives significant regulatory power to the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) to determine what constitutes "misinformation" and "disinformation." While combating false information is important, the broad definitions and potential for subjective interpretation could stifle legitimate discussion and debate on critical public issues. Content that is reasonably verifiable as "false" or "misleading" could include a range of speech that challenges the government or prevailing opinions, even if well-intentioned or supported by minority experts. This could infringe on the freedom of expression and suppress diverse viewpoints. Overreach of Government Control: The bill allows the ACMA to impose "digital platform rules," which could include risk management requirements, media literacy plans, and compliance with codes. The risk management measures appear vague and open-ended, potentially burdening digital platforms with onerous compliance obligations. This could create an environment where platforms err on the side of excessive censorship to avoid penalties, which would limit the free exchange of ideas. Privacy Concerns: The bill grants ACMA extensive powers to collect information from digital communications platforms, including the ability to demand records on misinformation or disinformation. Although there are provisions to protect private messages, the level of surveillance this bill permits is alarming. The potential collection and reporting of users' activities by platforms could have chilling effects on privacy and civil liberties, particularly in an age where digital data is crucial to personal security. Impact on Small Businesses and Digital Platforms: Large tech companies may have the resources to comply with the new rules and regulations; however, smaller platforms and independent digital services could struggle under the weight of compliance costs. This could stifle innovation, reduce competition, and result in fewer options for Australian consumers in the digital marketplace. Potential for Abuse: Given the bill's broad definitions and powers, there is a risk that it could be used to silence dissent or control narratives during sensitive times, such as elections, public health emergencies, or economic crises. There is little in the bill that ensures transparency and accountability in how ACMA would implement these rules, opening the door to potential overreach or misuse of power by future governments. In conclusion, while I understand the desire to protect Australians from harmful misinformation, this bill presents more risks than benefits. The potential harm to free speech, privacy, and smaller digital players is too significant to ignore. I urge you to oppose this bill and work towards a solution that better balances the need for public safety with the preservation of our democratic freedoms.

There is no “hate speech” exception to the First Amendment. So, many Americans wonder: Is hate speech legal? Contrary to a common misconception, most expression one might identify as “hate speech” is protected by the First Amendment and cannot lawfully be censored, punished, or unduly burdened by the government — including public colleges and universities.

Many of our politicians simply no longer understand genuinely free speech or why it's fundamental for secular liberal democracies. This is largely due to dumbed down politicisation throughout our education systems. Decades ago, the political left understood free speech but now very few of them do. A few leftists like Noam Chomsky still do understand free speech, but these days his defence is ignored. Similarly, the late US law professor Ronald Dworkin, a Democrat, also understood and defended genuinely free speech against the increasingly totalitarian minded political left.

Misinformation called by government ? We can not determine by ourselves ? Does the government think you have no brain ? Censorship … if I’m not mistaken didn’t hitler do the same ? They tried that in the USA and they killed the bill , misinformation czar , czar hmm that word sounds familiar also .. the former Soviet Union . In USA they do it in other ways pressure corporations and news outlets not to allow information they deem a threat. Tyranny is approaching us all we the people need to stop the mind control known as censorship.

“And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand?... The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin's thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt! If...if...We didn't love freedom enough. And even more – we had no awareness of the real situation.... We purely and simply deserved everything that happened afterward.”
