When Russia invaded I took one of Timothy Snyder’s online Yale courses to inform myself because I realised I was woefully ignorant. Russia invaded you. Yours is an absolutely just cause. I therefore wanted to stand with you. I pray. My friends and I send hand made beanies and gloves and sometimes toys to a church in Dnipro that is helping displaced people. Money too when we can. It isn’t much but we care. We don’t look down on you. Rather up. The more I see of Ukrainian culture the more I respect and admire it. I recognise you are ‘the shield of Europe’. Your lives have been turned upside down by a madman. I know something of war. I grew up in the context of WW2 veterans and I have been married for 54 years to a Vietnam veteran. I know the impact of trauma when good peoll oks are exposed to unthinkable horrors. I realise that in Ukraine it is the civilians as well as the veterans The whole thing breaks my heart. I wish that those who hold the levers of power would join with Ukraine wholeheartedly in common cause. You will prevail because Russians don’t have anything to fight for and you have vision, unity and resilience. Your creativity in finding low cost tech ways to solve battlefield problems is changing warfare as you go. Western nations are now learning from you. South Africa's civil society is very vocal and the corrupt ruling party that takes money from Russia lost their parliamentary majority in this year's election and were forced into a coalition with the opposition.
