According to Sri Lanka’s electoral process, to win the election and become the president, a candidate must receive more than 50% of the total votes cast. In other words, 50% of the total votes cast plus one additional vote. The second counting of preference votes is conducted if none of the contestants receive 50% + 1 of the total votes cast.
