Total war is here. The UN speaks in the past tense. In 2015, the so-called Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action – or the Iran-US nuclear deal – came into force and the friendship between the US and Iran began. But three years later, new President Donald Trump withdrew from the deal and launched a drastic sanctions campaign "to put maximum pressure on Iran." Iran responded by increasing uranium enrichment, while hateful rhetoric and military escalation intensified. A year later, in 2019, Trump designated the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a foreign terrorist organization. And this despite the fact that the IRGC is officially part of the Iranian state army. Another critical deterioration in relations came after the killing of elite Quds Force commander Qasem Soleimani in Baghdad. Iran vowed to retaliate and announced that it would "no longer commit to the restrictions under the nuclear deal." A series of IRGC attacks against US bases in Iraq followed.
