I definitely did not have any advantages due to my race, quite the opposite actually. Even though I am White, I never felt comfortable around White folks. I went into the Army in oder to be able to go to college, I never intended to make it a career. I had an Army buddy who happened to be Black. Even though I was more qualified to get a promotion (more time in service and in grade and high test scores, all across the board I was more qualified and deserving since he had bad behavior reports), he got the promotion. When I asked my Black platoon sergeant about it, he said, "I gotta help my brotha". I liked both of them and oddly felt OK about it. At least he respected me enough to be honest about it. I went to college in 1985 and ever since then I have identified myself as Black on everything. College apps, loan apps, everything. I avoided meeting face to face where possible in order to not be seen as White. Over the years that became increasingly easier due to computers and internet not requiring face to face. I always felt Black around White folks and was generally accepted by Black folks, but I felt my Whiteness at times, especially when at a party or event surrounded by Black folks who did not know me. Often a Black friend would step up for me with a , "He cool" to get me out of sticky situations. I have kept my identifying as Black a secret. I took a DNA test about 15 years ago and found out I am indeed Black. I am one tenth of one percent Black (recently doubled to 2 tenths of one percent), but I am 99.82% White. I did receive a few things due to my being "Black" I once got a $1,500 scholarship. But on the whole I dont think it really mattered and all I have accomplished was by and large due to my hard work. Any advantage I got for being Black did go to helping a Black man, my son. He just finished Law School and secured a clerkship with a judge on the 9th circuit. He is considering going into politics. I say all that to ask this. If my son should rise to a lofty position, do you think if my identifying as Black comes out, will hurt him, help him, or no diff?
