With whom? Which nation or all of them? There was no Indigenous nation with whom to negotiate or single group of persons that represented the Aboriginal peoples. Where does Aboriginal identity start and end? What portion of ancestry must be aboriginal for the person to be able to ignore their non-aboriginal ancestry in a grab for land, cash and power? How do you sign a treaty with a people that are internally at war with each other? Please note that the Aboriginals do claim to be custodians of the land in ancient times BUT being a custodian does not equate with ownership! I have aboriginal members of my immediate family and all would rather simply be recognized as Australian rather than some form of rediscovered caveman with no written history and little homogeneous culture. Their European ancestry has 2000 years of heroism and sacrifice across more than one continent. Seriously it should not matter whether a person is aboriginal or not what really matters is whether they are Australian or not!
