There also the problem of the silent electric vehicles. I'm ancient enough to remember people complaining and protesting about noise emissions from vehicles. Legislation was introduced to force car makers to reduce engine noise, but not too much so pedestrians couldn't hear oncoming traffic. Today, we have vehicles that have little to no noise emissions being driven on our roads which will once again become an issue with regards to pedestrian safety. Inattention and distraction while crossing the road combined with noiseless traffic will become the real life version of Frogger. Reducing speed limits is not the solution. Education, common sense and an external loud speaker simulating engine noise will be more effective. Who remembers the ad campaigns targeting littering in SA? They were so effective that they made a huge impact on reducing the litter around Adelaide. If engines keep getting quieter then the streets will become a real life game of Frogger.
