Is that a threat on our part to invade? Poor choices, wishful thinking and plain old apathy over recent decades mean that we simply don’t have the military capability to make good on any such threat. What if China or Indonesia demanded we cease a certain course of action because, in their opinion, we were crossing some sort of red line? How would we interpret that? Why did our government refuse to allow our police and defence force personnel to protect Chinese-built infrastructure and the Chinese embassy during last year’s riots in Honiara? Such an approach undermines the rule of law. That single decision has forced the Solomon’s Island government to seek out a security deal with China that will, in turn, give Chinese security forces access to the country and to potential bases there in the future. Who was responsible for such a thoughtless decision? How are the other Pacific Island nations supposed to respond to this sense of white superiority being demonstrated by our elected representatives? We should expect our politicians to behave in a respectful manner when dealing with our neighbours and to pursue mutually beneficial strategies for all the people of this region?
