The guy is an idiot. There should be no help to buy period. Just inflates the market even further and just shuffles who gets to jump slightly more forward or backward in the line towards home ownership, but does nothing to deal with the line itself. Only policies that increase housing supply in areas people want to live will work. The rest is all bull****. Most terrible idea is taxpayers paying to cover $15-20k lenders mortgage insurance for borrowers who have not saved any meaningful deposit. Even a slight fall in house prices would put the borrower into negative equity.

Maybe stop adding 300,000 people a year to the population by uncontrolled immigration would help, if they wanted to help. Newsflash - they don't.

Ultimately rent payments *are* mortgage payments. Investors buy homes not caring about the price because it will be the renters who will be paying the mortgage. Investors like that are part of the house unaffordability problem.

You also have to pay for the owners corporation if an apartment which could be a hefty bill.

You have forgotten that the mortgage payment is not the end of it. A property owner has to pay for insurance, rates, water or maintenance. SO just because the mortgage payments are the same as the rent doesn't mean you should buy. It is still cheaper to rent and it gives you more flexibility, that is, if you can find a rental. The current government is making it pretty hard for renters to do that.

Yeah this is not a good idea, subsidising insurance companies will just give insurers reason to jack up premiums
