Safe unless you have asthma ,CPOD, heart problems or a sulphur allergy. Then you definitely want to avoid the island because the VOG can blow any direction depending on the winds. There also tiny strands of glass floating in the air that can get into your lungs called "Pele's hair".
The lava will not hurt but the air can. Proceed with caution and bring good masks. If you need medical treatment on the Big Island you'll quickly learn how incompetent the hospitals are or you'll have to be flown to Oahu to get treatment. It's not Disneyland folks.

10-15 yrs ago i sent my idea to prevent Valcano from erpuin. it is really easy. when the lava is boiling underneath before eruption, dig a hole on the side of the mountain and drain those gases and collect and sell those gases and pay for the digging a hole and encasing a large bore tubing. it can prevent the valcno fprm erupting.
