Head football coach Deion Sanders has received backlash after announcing he will be leaving Jackson State University, a historically Black college and university (HBCU), to take over as head coach at the University of Colorado, a Power Five school. Television host Bomani Jones shares his thoughts with CNN This Morning. #CNN #News
I think it is sickening how we as black people are so quick to judge and find fault in our own. Deion Sanders did a wonderful job while at Jackson State and he has the right just as anyone else to better himself! He’s done more than everyone who’s criticized him has done! In fact they’ve done nothing at all!! No one was giving a damn about HBCU’s until Deion arrived and he made an immediate impact on not only the university, but the kids as well as the town of Jackson itself!! So Deion fulfilled his obligations and far exceeded any expectations and he deserves to move on!

The success he had at JSU was never going to really hit its mark until we proved that we can compete at the highest levels. By moving to the PAC 12 AND bringing 49 players with him from the HBCU community (they would have played wherever Deion coached), his success proves that HBCU players can compete with PAC 12. This WILL help HBCUs! Now if HBCUs follow the model, get the right coaching, etc perhaps it leads to more HBCUs aggresively pursuing a move to NCAA D1.

Before I make this statement, I will acknowledge that what Deion Sanders did at JSU was incredible. You have to acknowledge and give him his due for that..
With that being said, I’m trying to figure out what people mean when they say “Look what he’s done for HCBU’s?” What did he do? He did something for ONE HCBU and so people listened when he talked about HCBU programs in a general sense.
Did you all of a sudden see all of these top prospects say “Well guess what, I’m going to an HCBU now all because Coach Prime won at JSU? No. You had JSU specifically getting good recruits BECAUSE Deion Sanders was at JSU coaching and winning. Not specifically because it was an HCBU. And guess what, he’s already having the same affect on Colorado with recruits and hasn’t coached a single game yet.
If you want to give him credit for what he did at JSU ok. But people need to stop gaslighting as if he changed the entire landscape of HCBU football programs because he didn’t. He changed ONE and it was JSU.

Bomani Jones is REALLY GOOD at what HE does - RUNNING HIS MOUTH. He saying hes an HBCU Alumni and obviously has a large following but instead of using that platform to congratulate Dion and work with him to continue the blueprint of higher visibility and partnerships hes using his voice to knock him down and discount his contribution - TYPICAL crab barrel mentality.
Lastly, Bomani and others keep mentioning the salary and the amount of time it SHOULD take for DIon to affect real change. This implies that Dion should take a limited salary for 10 years. IS Bomani reducing his salary in half to help JSU or any other HBCU? Is he connecting with his legion of supporters and other Network celebrities' to help keep the visibility high and the funding coming in? If so we would like to see the receipts. Other than criticism and talk what is he doing besides increasing HIS bag? To me it looks no different than what Dion is doing - securing a future

Bomani Jones sat up there in front of WHITE women... in front of a CNN WHITE-ass audience and crapped on Coach Sanders!! He criticized Coach Prime for leaving, but had NOTHING to say about the DOZENS of issues Coach was dealing with at JSU - issues with the administration, being shorted from ticket sales, multiple thefts of his property and break-ins, slain bodies on campus, no water in the city of Jackson, donating HALF his salary to the program, and PLENTY of other issues!! Coach Prime said he was entertaining other offers and hid nothing from JSU. Where was Bomani Jones and all these other critics when Coach Prime ASKED for help and donations?! The people with the MOST to say have done the LEAST to keep Coach Sanders at JSU!! Everyone fumbled the bag AND the ball with this Coach Prime situation!! University of Colorado saw Coach Prime's VALUE and willing to PAY big money. JSU administration, JSU fans and alumni, Coach Prime's critics and detractors, local and national businesses, Black celebrities and athletes... ALL should done the same!!
