IT specialist Ken Herbert is an Australian who has been in Ukraine since 2019 and is now in the middle of the Russian war in Kyiv.
Mr Herbert said he plans to evacuate the capital once it is safe to do so.
'I've had a bag packed for the last couple of weeks just in case there was a problem that arose, and I'm ready to go as soon as I need to,' Mr Herbert told Sky News host Chris Smith.
He said people in Ukraine see the West as doing 'effectively nothing', as sanctions 'mean nothing' and they want 'physical intervention'.
That is not entirely true. People on the ground maybe, but government does not demand physical intervention. They ask for enough weapons. Their people fighting with Molotov Cocktails, instead of raffles, They do not have enough helmets, night-vision goggles, and protective clothes. They ask to close their sky and that is not true that would be physical intervention. The US could allow Israel to give Ukraine the Iron dome! They are still buying Russian gas and oil, fueling the war That is what Ukrainians are talking about!

The western powers have always been reluctant to allow the Ukraine into NATO for obvious reasons.
1. There is no way in the world they could protect the Ukraine - even if they established an enormous presence there.
2. They had previously made commitments to Putin not to bring The Ukraine into the NATO fold
3. They would have immediately triggered world war 3 - possibly as a nuclear conflict.
Some invasion of the Ukraine has been inevitable ever since the uprising in 2013/4.
I personally thought Russian intervention would be limited to a corridor along the Black Sea coast - cutting off the Ukraine from the sea. I expected that to happen last year soon after Biden was installed as President.
Defending the Ukraine was no real possibility. The best that the western powers could do was to re-arm Ukraine. But doing so might also have triggered off a ‘conflagration”.
Putin gave many warnings he was unhappy about the Ukraine’s attempt to bring NATO troops up to his border. He signalled his position with thousands of troops, tanks etc.
And the western politicians refused to accept his “demands”. Right up to the point that negotiations became moot.
Biden, the EU and the U.K. - the key powers in NATO could not get their act together and discuss united actions. Most possibly because the Ukraine was too far away and it would take too long to move men and materials. Things might have been different if the Ukraine wasn’t so land locked.
But if Biden, or anybody else, had sent a carrier force into the Black Sea they would again have set off world war 3. And NATO would very readily have lost a large and key part of its naval forces - perhaps to preemptive thermonuclear cruise missile strikes. And possibly in the middle of the Bosphorus Straits.
And I doubt that Turkey, even as a member of NATO would be happy to be “ground zero” for a nuclear world war 3.
