The PKM is a better belt fed weapon, honestly. That's why some American units started using it unofficially in Afghanistan. The more powerful 7.62mm gave a boost in range and barrier penetration and accompanied the M4 very well. The M240 is nice for that mission, but the PKM is still the best. The Polish are in the process of adapting a PKM inspired design to a modern modulation friendly platform that would more easily be able to use optics, suppressors, lasers, etc, of course it will be chambered for the NATO 7.62x51mm, not the Soviet 7.62x54mm.
