I remember, and it has been some time, certainly pre-Trump, when the National Review writers could make coherent, informed conservative arguments. They were intellectuals and wrote like it. They started to slide with their support of Palin as a good VP nomination. After many claimed never-Trump in 2015, and most, though not all, quickly did an about face, the magazine became sophomoric. The online content is typically awful beyond words. Read the comments section to understand just who they are "thinking down" for. 80% of their writing is on offer to rhe bottom 60% of IQ's.. What was once a useful and even important source for conservative, "fusionist" dialogue has become a swamp attacking all things DNC while either praising or outright ignoring the GOP, depending on just how possible defenses are.
That is, the National Review no longer represents conservative intellectuals. It represents Republicans, the political party, which is fundamentally divorced from anything resembling conservatism.
I'd like to think William Buckley was rolling in his grave, but he was a posh, well born charismatic. He threatened to punch Chomsky in the face because, intelligent as he was, he was no match for the cognitive force of Chomsky, and looking like a fool made him smirk and threaten (however benignly) his debate opponent. Buckley was an opportunist. Yale. The CIA. Books on God at Yale directed by a Catholic faith at school thst usnt Catholic. Could hdve gone to Fordham. He needed pesigree to advance cheap shots.
He did however have the charisma to employ writers at the National Review who may not have been larger than life personalities, but were far more intelligent.
But the National Review of conservatism has little to offer. A handful of writers that think. Just avoid the online content. It's shallow partisan cheerleading most often.
