Waterville Dam.. Waterview? Was leaking and feared was going to break. So, the dam was opened.. causing the major flood.
Helicopters are flying over our area daily bringing personnel and supplies.The once beautiful WNC mountains are an especially difficult to navigate when the roads have been washed away and communications have been so disrupted. The government is doing whatever it can and the army of volunteers are selflessly giving their all and power company employees are working around the clock to restore some kind of order to an area in desperate need. I've been here almost 30 years and love it and I'm asking the people spreading tales to spread hope instead.

I've not read, heard or seen a single instance where Vice President Harris has even attempted to take advantage of any aspect of Hurricane Helene and the devastating aftermath. I've observed her traveling to affected areas in order to be on the ground, showing compassion for survivors, as well as those who've lost loved ones. All the while asking mayors, governors, Representatives, Senators and normal folk, "What do you need?", then doing whatever's necessary to ensure that needs are met.
On the other hand, I hear Republican Representatives accuse the government of controlling the weather, ostensibly for political purposes. I guess thinning out MAGA in rural western North Carolina? On the other hand, I hear far-right media mouthpieces claim that the government is turning away donations, supplies and volunteers. On the other hand, I hear the Republican presidential candidate spew disinformation denigrating the government's response to the storm's aftermath, as well as aid to survivors.
Perhaps most importantly for this story, I hear and see a Republican governor of one of the most vulnerable states in our union playing politics; refusing to take calls from Vice President Harris and going so far as to say that she has no role to play here. To that I'd ask Gov. DeSantis what role he believes that a former President of the United States has to play in this situation.
We as a country used to so much be better than this. Whenever a natural disaster befell our fellow citizens, we jumped to help those in need...regardless of whether a hurricane hit, or a flood inundated, or a tornado ripped through, or a wildfire decimated the landscape, the federal government mobilized in support of states' governors to come to the aid of the people; to clean-up and to rebuild. We did this without question or hesitation, regardless of the political leanings of the community. As with so many other proud traditions, never before in our nation's history have we seen a candidate for the highest office in the land politicize a storm's aftermath for political gain. Never before in our nation's history has a presidential candidate spread disinformation for political gain.
Our collective response to natural disasters isn't a Democratic issue. It's not a Republican issue. It's an American issue. Come on America, we're better than this.
