I would love to know the last time Whitmer spent any time in the hood of Detroit or if she herself would be willing to walk around any of those neighborhoods alone at night. My guess is never!
I was born and raised in the metro Detroit area and attended college at University of Detroit Mercy, which is next to a rough side of town. Hearing gunfire or stories of robbery and theft outside of campus was pretty common. I also lived in Detroit and work downtown for a time too. Detroit is definitely getting better downtown and some pockets outside of the city center, but an overwhelming majority of the city is still really rough. A lot of neighborhoods are very unsafe, has awful schools, high property tax that most average Detroiters can’t afford, terrible infrastructure, corruption, and blight and abandonment are prevalent. I love Detroit and have a lot of pride for the city, but that doesn’t mean we can’t be ignorant to the fact that Democratic policies have failed its people for decades. Which is exactly why more people in Detroit voted for Trump than any Republican in recent history. You can’t fix a problem if you don’t acknowledge there is one in the first place, and Detroit still has plenty of them.

The condition of Detroit is no secret to anyone in the area. Only reason downtown has been kept up is because that’s where the soccer mom likes to take pictures and spend money which is also ran and operated by people outside of Detroit.
