it used to be free when I went there but it was also based on merit with limited numbers tied to ACTUAL industry needs......before it became a shameless business and sheltered workshop for entitled kids (and indoctrination centres). I now teach at one and loathe what they have become like many lecturers.

Both Uni and Tafe should be free for Australian citizens doing degrees/courses in those areas of critical shortage, so for those degrees/courses that are not deemed in that category would be fully user pays. This would be a win/win for all. As a side not, the uni's need to stop 'selling' degrees/courses' to senior citizens with the hookline that they can get it on HECS debt but never have to repay it because they simply won't earn enough to repay it and its not payable upon death... this is just adding pressure to an already exaushted system. If senior citizens want to keep learning that's awesome, just do it on a fully self funded basis, if they can't afford that there is always YouTube tutorials and podcasts.

This is becomming an all too common theme in Australia where the security around detainees is not working so the primeminister is put under the spot light.

Every year China have about 11 million students who graduated from universities in China. Almost none of them need student loan when they graduate: the government set annual university tuition fee at A$1000 and A$250 for campus accomodation per year for every student in China. Every university has 4-7 giant canteens to provide 3 meals per day at heavily discounted price to every student. Each canteen can provide meals to hundreds of students at one time.

One of the best things about HECS is that it makes (some) people think about whether they want to take on a debt for a degree that won't make them any money. As opposed to this carte blanche insanity of "just do whatever degree takes your fancy..... because it's FREE!"
