In Europe, the culture is I, me & mine. Everyone wants to be the boss, have power & money for himself/herself. In China, the culture is we, us & ours. Every one wants to co-operate & co-exist with each other.

Definition of the term “democracy” is a subjective thing often equate to Western style electoral system. To the so-called Liberal West, since China considers itself as a communist or socialist country, it is therefore not democratic. But that is a narrow view — one that chooses to look at form instead of substance so to speak. The oft quoted statement of Abraham Lincoln “government of the people, by the people, for the people” is indeed a brilliant expression of the quality and concept for any form of democracy. But to think that the current electoral system adopted by the so called Liberal West as only viable or the be-all and end-all political system to deliver a “government of the people” is to ignore the reality. Take the United States for example, political lobbying has metastasised, like cancer, across the political divides in the United States. It has become a big industry in the United States. According to James Thurber, there are about 100,000 lobbyists working in this industry which brings in $9 billion annually. “The special interest lobbying enhanced the power of elite groups. And that was a key factor shifting the nation's political structure toward an oligarchy in which the average Americans have little or no independent influence,” observed Martin Gilens and Benjamin in their 2014 study. Worst, competition amongst the oligarchs and their subservient political elites to perpetuate their own vested interest tends to crowd out the larger interest of the nation. The disturbing lack of congruence of objectives amongst the constituents of America’s political power base impedes meritocracy. It serves the minority few to the exclusion of the majority. In an ironic twist, it is precisely the ingrained doctrine of “the government of the people, by the people, and for the people”the CPC subscribes to that is propelling China’s rise at a speed and scale unseen in the history of mankind. The transformation of China — from an impoverished country to the world’s largest industrial economy within the span of just under five decades — speaks for itself. Credit should be given to CPC’s ability to leverage on China’s formidable cultural heritage (of a continuous civilisation), as well as its ability to successfully nurture and harness the creativity and productivity of a huge and well educated population — one that has live through unprecedented changes with astonishing propensity to adopt and adapt to innovations.
