Canavan is probably over-charitable in cutting slack for govt. figures in the initial stages of the pandemic: its novelty was surely grounds for _increased_, not decreased questioning and debate. Had Morrison had it in him to evaluate the situation more calmly and critically, put the CHOs - and the Premiers - in their boxes (at the top, but not on top as Churchill once put it) and followed even a Sweden-like policy, perhaps he could have surpassed Menzies and gone to the head of the class for this one thing if nothing else.
If they're serious about their being in public life, then Morrison, Hunt and all the others should go to their graves pondering that once-in-a-lifetime "right-now" moment they had, and failing that test ...
