Former Foreign Minister Alexander Downer says he doesn't think Russian President Vladimir Putin is being guided by 'rational thinking'.
It comes amid an escalation in the situation in Ukraine after Mr Putin on Thursday declared military action.
'It seems to me reckless and extraordinary that he would do such a thing as this,' Mr Downer told Sky News host Chris Kenny.
'It's just deeply depressing.'
