AFR special correspondent Misha Zelinsky has spoken with Sky News from Kyiv, Ukraine.
"It's been pretty intense," Mr Zelinsky told Sky News host Chris Smith.
"We had reports overnight that Russia was likely to stage strikes in the capital at around 4am, so sure enough, at around 4:15, there was some loud explosions that went off, and we had our sirens go off in the hotel where I'm staying."
"The Russians are certainly getting closer."
