The China visa is still a huge obstacle to overcome. It is deterring me from going. The application form is long and asks about my parents, who have been dead for over two decades. I have to supply flight details and hotel bookings for the whole trip, although I can apply for various lengths of visa, there is uncertainty over whether I would get one for the length I planned, or even one at all. It appears that flights and hotels can be changed at will after getting the visa, which brings into question why they are required at all. There is, so I'm told, no requirement to follow the plan at all. So I am unlikely to bother going. I'm not going to spend days planning and booking hotels and flights for a six month tour, filling in the form and then have to cancel the lot, as I travel independently. If it rains I don't travel. If I don't like a hotel, I go somewhere else. Maybe I find one place more interesting and want to stay longer. Too much bother and effort, for no apparent reason other than to have the visa wallah check the boxes.
