I'm old enough to remember Nikita Kruschev tried to expand into Cuba, president Kennedy threatened nuclear war as the move was considered an aggression. The Soviet Union backed down and removed the missiles. When the Soviet Union dissolved with Ukrain breaking off NATO promised not to expand into the new Russian state. Three or four months ago Putin warned that NATO was installing ( basically same type) defensive missiles in Ukraine putting Russia in peril, sounds like he had the same concerns as we did back then. I believe China is sticking by Russia for the same reason plus nefarious reasons.
