Let me explain why the preference votes are counted: In Sri Lanka, when voters cast their ballots, they have the option to mark number 1 for their primary candidate, number 2 for their secondary preference, and number 3 for their tertiary preference. According to Sri Lankaβs electoral process, to win the election and become the president, a candidate must receive more than 50% of the total votes cast. In other words, 50% of the total votes cast plus one additional vote. The second counting of preference votes is conducted if none of the contestants receive 50% + 1 of the total votes cast.
