Because a lot of people don't vote in the U.S.. The real disconnect is - asking people what they think - and getting them to vote. That's why the Democrats have a better voter turnout. As for decades they have a very large volunteer group - that ensures people register to vote.
And remember they use the State electoral rolls in the U.S.. That's why - voting day in the U.S. is going to look different to the opinion polls.
