Not seeing anyone saying the obvious…The US can’t withdraw from Okinawa. It’s far too important of a strategic location. It’s vital to peace in Asia. Is it fair to Okinawa? Of course not. Just like it’s not fair that Poland fell between Germany and Russia.

It is also ironic because I have been binge reading one piece lately and nearly caught up with wano, and one piece has been all about the will to fight, freedom and 'people's rule' in last few arcs. Then you think about how it is the most popular manga in japan in the last 20+ years,, a cultural phenomenon , and then you look at Japan's current state. Ironic indeed.
It's baffling to me how the citizens of Japan, a first world nation, so obediently gave away their sovereignty to the US. And it is too late now, the military bases are only the visible side of the problem. over decades USA influence has reduced Japan to a state where now they can't survive a day without US anymore. Japan will be the first 'Great' civilisation in modern world history that will collapse on its own, without the direct result of war or rebellion. It's sad yet inevitable and even though I don't want it to happen, one part of me eagerly awaits to see it as a history enthusiast

The US military bases also polluted the drinking water with harmful chemicals. This affects 1/3 population in Okinama (about 500k people) and farmland over there. This pollution also happens in some areas in Germany and Hawaii that are close to a US military base.

USA stored Agent Orange on Okinawa and leaked into the underground water supply and after investigation with photo proof that US soldiers buried it at the end of Vietnam war. they still said it didnt belong to USA. there was an american that had a bunch of cancers and the US cut his medical benefit in 2012 because they didnt want more of US soldier to ask for medical benefit related to Agent Orange that they handled on Okinawa.
