This means that nobody, including a government, can try to end life. It also means that the government should take appropriate measures to safeguard the lives of its citizens, not just by enacting laws; but also to take appropriate steps to protect life when there is a looming threat.
Unfortunate perhaps, but it takes the Covid-19 pandemic to expose the competence, or the lack of competence of governments around the world. No doubt, Beijing is at the top and Washington is at the bottom of the table.
Notwithstanding that China’s population is more than 4 times that of the United States, it has managed to effectively rein in the coronavirus just within 5 months after the first outbreak in Wuhan. In fact, China was so effective in its crisis management that it had not observe a single death due to Covid-19 since May 18, 2020. China has managed to sustain that for a period of 2 years. During that period, save for restrictions in international travel, the Chinese people had been able to work and enjoy the quality of life and freedom unrivalled elsewhere. But of course, versus the losses of life, the inability to travel abroad is a relatively small price to pay.
