First chili peppers grown in space are harvested
The International Space Station hosted a taco bash for astronauts as they celebrated the harvest of the first chili peppers grown in space, according to ANU astrophysicist and cosmologist Dr Brad Tucker. 'So this was really using the first chili peppers grown in space, so there's been a huge amount of work done in the International Space Station to growing vegetables, to growing fresh food up there,' he said. Dr Tucker said astronauts in the International Space Station 'simply could not rely' on food deliveries as they are not efficient and infrequent. He said there are other benefits to growing food in space other than just nutrition as there are 'social aspects', like being able to hold taco nights. 'That social aspect of eating has to be part of it more than just simply nutrition to survive,' he said.
