Ron DeSantis officially seeking second term as Florida governor
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is seeking another term to lead the state after his team announced he's filed for re-election, sparking further speculation he may throw his hat in the ring for president in 2024. Governor DeSantis called his decision to seek a second term a 'formality' however his popularity has caused voters to believe he may become a Republican candidate at the next federal election. Mr DeSantis has made a name for himself in the last few years especially with his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. Recent polling in the last year found the Florida governor has become a strong favourite as a potential Republican candidate and in some cases he's not far off Donald Trump. An October poll carried out by John Bolton Super PAC found Trump leading the candidates at 26.2 per cent, however DeSantis was not far behind at 25.2 per cent. The leader of the sunshine state has brushed off rumours he is running in 2024, calling it 'speculation' and 'purely manufactured'. Last month Donald Trump declared he could beat Ron DeSantis in the primaries like he would 'beat everyone else' if he chose to run. The former president has not publicly said if he is going to run again in 2024.
