Onya Murray. One of the reasons I'll continue voting Labor. One of the arguments industry makes for continuing the unethical practice of live sheep trafficking from Australia, is the old "If we don't do it, someone else will do it worse" argument. Well, there are a few problems with that argument. 1. Why don't we apply it to wildlife trafficking, human trafficking/sex slave trade, organ trafficking or the drug trade? Maybe we could club seals more humanely than Canada, or murder whales to a gold standard. There is, after all, a profit to be made from many other equally unethical practices. 2. Several countries already export more live sheep than us (EU, Romania, Spain) - lots more... like up to 6 x more sheep. In 2022, Jordan (whom we EXPORT LIVE SHEEP TO) exported 1,778,120 live sheep to our 524,908. Why are we exporting live sheep to a country that exports more live sheep than we do? All these countries (and the others that export similar amounts or fewer sheep) export whether we do or do not, i.e., they don't NOT export live sheep because we do. 3. The voyage distances from the countries that industry says would likely take over our markets when we exit (like Sudan and Ethiopia) are shorter... sometimes MUCH shorter, e.g., 10 hours versus 16 days. Even voyages from Romania are shorter. 4. The animals being exported from the countries that industry says will take our spot would be going from countries with no animal welfare laws, where they would have had their throats cut whilst fully conscious, to countries with no animal welfare laws, where they will have their throats cut whilst fully conscious (it's a shitty world). BUT... 5. Industry is trying to tell you that it's a better animal welfare outcome to put 50,000 sheep on a ship in Australia, where they would have been stunned prior to slaughter (still very traumatic, but not as traumatic as fully conscious slaughter) for around 16 days, to be slaughtered in a country with no animal welfare laws or legally enforceable regulations, by having their throats cut whilst fully aware, than it is to have 50,000 sheep go from conscious slaughter to conscious slaughter with a voyage of a MUCH shorter duration. Sounds like bullshit to me.

Once Labor phases out farming and mining, where does its inner city luvvies think their money will come from?

Instead of banning legitimate trade, why not regulate it, so its safe and humane. If its regarded as not humane, the Halal process should be stopped in entirety.

Good, live export is horrific. My husband used to police Dover/ folkestone,Kent,England live export to France. The conditions of the animals was often quite disgusting. The animals were often on the hauler trucks for days....Thats not right.

I’m so glad that someone is standing up for animals. They suffer so much at our hands.
