So - what no-one tells you is. And how many solar solar panels are needed to drive the huge electric motors. Because you have to pump backwards - a dam of water - that overnight to release to create hydro electricity. That's a lot of water.
Good old Queensland hot summers day - if the air temp is high Celsius 30's or low 40's - that black thing has to go close to 50 degrees Celsius or more. And go the manufacturers - specification sheet - and they will tell how much efficiency as solar panel loses when it gets hot.
Next thing - how much does it cost - to pump water back up hill. If it's rains or is cloudy solar panels also drop off "their perch."
The bottom line is - how many solar panels do you need to drive huge electric pumps - lots and lots. Go and look up the specifications of any large volume - high pressure transfer pump - like you need - pipes you can stand up inside of. That's the sort of volumes you are talking here. And if it breaks down - again - the costs outweigh - the benefits. It costs more to make it work - then it produces.
Those are big electric motors - that need a lot of electricity. And if you start to do the math - you soon realise - it costs way more - money to pump water backwards every day - then it does to release it as hydro power and the electricity it generates. And that's the problem on pumped hydro electricity.
If you can find someone stupid enough in Government to throw money at it - labor are always front an center - as the political dumb bunnies that fall for this gag. Not because it works - because it sounds good - for the media sound byte.
