The Australian Bureau of Statistics today said it will begin monthly reporting of inflation from October this year, bringing Australia into line with other nations including the US, the UK, Canada, Japan and Europe.
ABS Agency Head Dr David Gruen said this has been on the bureau's "wishlist" for "quite some time".
"But if you go back a few years it was prohibitively expensive to imagine producing a monthly CPI ... it requires collecting more of the data more frequently and that's expensive, especially with the techniques that we used to use," he told Sky News Business Editor Ross Greenwood.
