Extremely brave heros that saved Ukraine and many people who Knowingly gave up their lives to save their own. Great respect!

Greetings and thank you from America. I was a school kid when this happened. As a newspaper delivery boy, I followed the story closely. I remember the men who worked to contain the disaster as the greatest heroes of peacetime. It is shameful that the Soviet Union did so little for their families. Slava Ukraine!

Likely also the FSB. Russia has been trying to get its hands on Ukraine for over a century. Time to break this pattern.

This was the highest level of Russian engineering.

Ukraine. one used as the breadbasket of the soviet union then made to starve to death just because the USSR demanded it, then this heart braking disaster! its mad to think in less than my own lifetime we went from sworn enemies to brothers in arms. love from the UK

I remember that well. I live in Sweden, at that time just north of Stockholm. Reports came from the Swedish NC power plant in Forsmark, 120 km north of Stockholm, that they had increased levels of radioactivity in the morning at the 28th. During the day it stood clear it wasn't a leakage at Forsmark, and in the afternoon satellite pictures, provided by Swedes connected to Space Media Network, made it clear that something awful had happened in Chernobyl. The catastrophe led to that the whole area from Chernobyl up to the Nordics became affected, in Sweden the area around the city Gävle took the highest amount of radioactivity. For many years it was considered dangerous to eat mushrooms from the middle parts of Sweden, wild game and reindeer had to be checked for radioactivity before sold. You still can find cesium in all kinds of wild animals, especially wild boar. The Soviet Union, under Gorbachev, didn't admit anything had happened until they couldn't deny it any longer, when satellite photos from several companies showed the same thing. My son was 5 months old, and the first we learned about the health risks, E.G. thyroid cancer, were much higher to children, especially infants. We were really concerned until new investigations showed that where we lived the danger wasn't severe, but increased. In the areas that had the highest quantities of cesium people and many working in the healthcare sector say that about 10 years after the catastrophe the numbers of cancer raised. However, most scientists deny that has anything to do with the cesium levels... Critical voices say that the majority of those scientists are in one way or the other connected to the industrial side of nuclear power. I have my opinion clear. I believe them who have witnessed their families and friends die.

Remember, the plant was operating normally until an unqualified a-hole apparatchik came from Moscow to supervise a test, then interfered with the test, causing the "accident." Most of the people who made the scene safe enough to limit the damage and not irradiate Europe completely died horribly.

Chernobyl today is named putin. Far more dangerous.

Was it though? It’s not like the Russians are known for committing genocides. Particularly against Ukrainians.
@j.dunlop8295 Says:
It was all because USSR political advisors, made science engineering decisions! They knew of the fault, and hid it! "It was convenient!" But was cheaper!😢 Except for all the dead!

Jesus. I was born that year in June! 😮
