All of this chaos is due to the inevitable progress of AI. Soon, they won't be able to hide anything.
A teenager can easily develop a program, if it hadn't already been done, that can trace the connections between people and events. This would clearly indicate corruption and conspiracy.
They are terrified and can't afford to have Trump in charge, while they are trying to cover their tracks, and trick the public.
But it's inevitable.
