Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says every discussion with Pacific Island leaders have begun with a 'sense of relief' the Labor government�is now part of taking action on climate change.
'They have all expressed that support for the changed position that Australia has,' he said.
'Australia is now a participant in the constructive action that's required globally to deal with the challenge of climate change.'
We need to deal with the Solomon Islands' government in a respectful manner because the rest of the Pacific is watching and our cause is not helped by the condescending approach of the recent past that assumes whites somehow know what is best for the rest.
We need to work with the US and others such as the EU to genuinely help the people of this region. Time to show the people of the Pacific that we really do care about them, as many of us Australians, in reality, do care about our neighbours.
How are the Solomon Islanders supposed to view claims that they are Australia's backyard? We don't own or control them.
How are they supposed to react to being told they are "crossing a red line"? Is that a threat on our part to invade? Poor choices, wishful thinking and plain old apathy over recent decades mean that we simply don’t have the military capability to make good on any such threat.
What if China or Indonesia demanded we cease a certain course of action because, in their opinion, we were crossing some sort of red line? How would we interpret that?
Why did our government refuse to allow our police and defence force personnel to protect Chinese-built infrastructure and the Chinese embassy during last year’s riots in Honiara? Such an approach undermines the rule of law. That single decision has forced the Solomon’s Island government to seek out a security deal with China that will, in turn, give Chinese security forces access to the country and to potential bases there in the future. Who was responsible for such a thoughtless decision?
How are the other Pacific Island nations supposed to respond to this sense of white superiority being demonstrated by our elected representatives? We should expect our politicians to behave in a respectful manner when dealing with our neighbours and to pursue mutually beneficial strategies for all the people of this region? We must put away the racist and thoughtless thinking that only serves to harm our interests by alienating our neighbours to the detriment of our future security.
